Fida

The word FIDA means sacrifice in Arabic and beauty in local Indian context of usage. The reason why I chose this name is because Indian Truck Art is so exquisite to the country and now that it is a dying form of art it is essential to keep the art alive. The intention behind the truck art is also the amount of sacrifice the truck drivers do to be able to make their truck a home away from home.

The Inspiration

One of the most well known signages in India which also portrays the culture, art forms and designs is truck art and typography. The extravagant paintings and typographic details more than just precautionary messages for the other vehicles, it was an emotion

Exploration and Sketching

The more I observed trucks on the Indian roads I realized there are both serif and san serifs used but in completely different contexts – serif was only used for decoration purposes while san serif had some context of usage which was signages on the back of the truck. With this in mind I sketched out the the letters roughly and this time using a sharpie as my tool to refine the strokes I desired for the characters.

Letter Construction

The next step was to achieve the forms of these letters on a digital medium and for this reason I started off by using Illustrator and fix the descender and ascender line along with cap height and x-height for the letters as the first step.

I then proceeded to construct the letters using the tool – Glyphs. Tidying up the nodes and making sure that the strokes and weights match given keen attention towards to get the desired output.

The Typeface

Learnings

  1. I always questioned how type designers got their inspiration to create a typeface and what the process was, working on this project gave me that clarity.

  2. It is a very tedious process and time-consuming.

  3. It’s good to set a goal for the use case of your typeface and keep it in mind while designing.
